Delhi University- A Dream

by Team FUCCHA

Delhi University- the central & most preferred university in India is located in the well established capital city of India- “The New Delhi”. The main part of DU is North Campus; located in northern region of Delhi, has many famous & most prestigious colleges of Delhi University like Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), St. Stephens, Hindu, Hansraj, Miranda, etc. Apart from these famous colleges, many faculties like Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi School of Economics (DSE), Law Faculty, etc. are also located in this area. This region is not just famous for its education but also for its lip- smacking, delicious & amazing food available at cafés in Hudson Lane & Vijay Nagar. One cannot miss any of the café in this area; some of the most famous & best ones are QD’s, Rico’s, Big Yellow Door, Shawarma Wala ( in Kamla Nagar), etc. These are certain destinations that you can’t miss even if you are not a part of North Campus. And when you got to go to college you need to look amazing like hot divas & cool dudes; so to look attractive one need to have a good & wide wardrobe. To fill this wardrobe, north campus students prefer Kamla Nagar- the hub of branded as well as non- branded stores along with local chaos, stalls, etc. for clothing & accessories. Delhi-University-Admission .jpg Now taking a break from North Campus, we move on to South Campus located in the vicinity of ridges of Dhaula Kuan area of South Delhi. The colleges here are Sri Venkateswara (popularly known as Venky) , Ram Lal Anand, etc. South Campus is not like North, colleges here are scattered; some near Saket (Bhagat Singh, CVS), some near Greater Kailash (Gargi, LSR, Kamala Nehru), near Chankyapuri (Maitreyi, Jesus & Mary), Lodhi Road (Dyal Singh), Lajpat Nagar (PGDAV), and many more. As we talk of South Delhi, everything tends to become a bit more expensive than others parts of Delhi. Market places & eating areas like Khan Market, Defence Colony, Pandara Road, South Extn., Lajpat Nagar, M- Block Market of GK, Satya Niketan, Epicuria (Nehru Place), Saket, Vasant Kunj, Sarojini Nagar, etc. are definitely the places to hangout with your friends for both food & shopping. Although everybody wants to join North Campus; but South Campus is far better in terms of variety of food, places to hangout, shopping malls, etc. Apart from North & South Campus, we have certain off- campus colleges like Vivekananda, Lady Irwin, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce (SGGSCC), Keshav Mahavidyalya, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya & a college that has earned name & fame the international market within past 15 years is none other than “Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies (popularly known as CBS), all these colleges along with many other are either in East Delhi, West Delhi & certain other parts of Delhi. In recent times, what I have seen is that students are becoming crazy to get into DU, not just because it’s one of the best universities across India but because of the life they imagine to spend in college. They imagine a fantastic college life after a boundatious & strict 14 year school life. One of the main reason why students want to join DU is the fantasies created by Bollywood movies like “Rockstar”, “Rang De Basanti”, etc. Recently I had a word with a junior student from my school, he is from Science background & while talking about his future plans, he told me that he wants to pursue Chemistry from DU. I asked him why Chemistry, not any other subject, then he replied, just like the movie “Main Hoon Na”, he will also have a sensuous & gorgeous Chemistry professor like Sushmita Sen, who would arrive in a deep red saree with her bold looks; I just got amazed. I talked to a girl from my locality who cleared her IIT Mains exam told me that even if she clears IIT Advance, she will still pursue Physics from DU, not just because she has a keen interest in Physics but because she thinks DU provides a good platform to become a part of Bollywood; just like actress Diana Penty was chosen for the movie “Cocktail” while she was in  2nd year of her graduation. She also quoted, “I can also become a model by joining the fashion society of my college & can take part in Miss India just like Miss India 2014”. I then thought how crazy can one be to join DU. Then I suddenly realised that, even I started studying hard in the last three months of class 12th to get B.Com. (hons.) in DU. Even I used to think that DU is all fun without a pinch of pressure on student’s mind about studies. This is not just the case with me or the people I had a talk with, but this is even with the toppers of CBSE who want get inti DU. But as you enter a college of University of Delhi, you start realising that it is not like what you imagined. You can move like a freebird inside & outside your college; but it will adversely affect your attendance. Leave attendance apart; a thing I want to tell to my friend who imagined his Chemistry professor to be like “Sushmita Sen” that professors in DU are aged, cranky, with big spectacles, emotionless, non- cooperative & the cherry on the cake is they over- burden you with assignments, projects, class- tests, internal, etc. They can even make you cry by reducing your attendance & by not giving you good marks in Internal Assessments that costs you 25% of your total marks in Discipline Courses & 73% in your Foundation & Applied Courses. This is not a matter you can associate only with an aged professor but this is more with professors who have completed their studies within past 5- 10 years. They tend to make very biased decisions especially when the tasks are done in groups. They prefer to give good marks to their favourite students & to those who keep on buttering them. Delhi University is a multi- cultural university with students from all religions, castes, cultures, creed, provinces, states, languages, genders, sexual orientation studying under one roof. The recent trend in the student population is the students coming from North- eastern states. They are like free- birds, but still they don’t easily trust the students from Delhi itself. They make their groups with students from their area only. But it’s been noticed that these students are being bullied, ill- treated & even molested by their co- students, teachers & other unknown people. So, in order to protect their interest, special committees have been setup for their welfare & upliftment. Another issue that is prevalent in DU is Ragging. Although this practice has been banned, but still there are many who rag others. Many ragging- suffered students even commit suicide leading to a huge loss to future- Human Resource. Since this practice has been banned only on papers; it should be completely banned in reality & should get abolished from society. As here we saw the reality of Delhi University, I appeal to all the upcoming batches of class 12th to see whether the course they want to pursue fits their interest & mental level or not and then only decide upon the course and just get fascinated by the movies & realise the harsh realities of life before taking any decision, be it getting into a college. Actual colleges are much different from what students dream of. Study hard to get a course of your choice & interest not to get into a college with good name- “because what’s in the name?”
