Delhi University may scrap English entrance - CATE for 2013

by Team FUCCHA

Due to the introduction of the four year undergraduate degree courses from 2013, the University of Delhi (DU) may discontinue the Common Aptitude Test for English (CATE), which was the common entrance exam for admission to its undergraduate level B.A. English (Hon) programme. du Instead, DU is planning to conduct admissions to the course on the basis of Class XII marks, reported a leading national daily. CATE was introduced by DU in 2009 as a centralised test to check and evaluate a student's aptitude for studying an English programme like BA (Hons) English. CATE 2010 saw 12 colleges' participation; in 2011 there were 17 colleges that admitted students in their English (Hon) programme through CATE and 21 colleges (including Indraprastha College for Women, Hindu College, Miranda House, Kamla Nehru College, Lady Shri Ram) had used CATE 2012 scores for their admissionprocedures. The university officials have still not finished designing the course content for the English program and this might be keeping the English department occupied. Otherwise, usually by this time, the CATEnotification is set to be released. The administration and the admission committee are also of the view that in case the department or colleges wish to have an entrance exam for English programmes, it can be re-introduced in the next academic session.
