FIVE THINGS FOR FRESHERS ENTERING DELHI UNIVERSITY

by Team FUCCHA

The high cut-offs, the tough ECA trials, the huge lines, the tiring process of admission altogether; all this isn’t even the beginning. DU has a lot to offer and well, repent (ask any recently passed out Sociology student). But Delhi University still stands out to be the best of the best. So, what should a fresher expect while entering Delhi University? Here are the 5 things you can see coming as soon as you enter the campus gate. 1 1) It is not going to be like the Karan Johar Movies. Karan Johar’s college check list with what DU offers in the brackets:

  • Huge campus (Check)
  • Some Rich kids (Check)
  • A Few Big Cars (Check)
  • No classes (Uncheck)
  • Falling in love on day 1 (Uncheck)
  • Living like a rock star (Uncheck) – Did you not see Rock star? (Sorry for the pun)
  • Becoming everybody’s favorite (Uncheck)
  • Classes? More like 5 star waiting rooms (Uncheck)
  • Being asked to sing a prayer as a form of ragging (It actually depends on how weird/cool your seniors are) – Naaah, ragging isn’t allowed here. [Just kidding, like the sign on most walls of Hindu College which reads “This is Hindu and we do not rag!”]

I hope you get it now, that life in “Karan Johar Movies” is all in the movies. Delhi University will be real. And real is always better. (Thank me later for such sudden life lessons) 2 2) Classes in the first week will be effed up. If you expect for your classes to be well planned in the first week, you’ll be in for a surprise as these first week classes will be more like roaming around the college campus with your classmates and teachers, socializing. No form of actual ‘PADAI’ will take place. Hence, the first week is your time to make friends, and prepare for the forthcoming fresher’s. 3 3) Even if your seniors will prey on you in the first week, you’ll be best friends with them in the future. “We in Delhi University do not rag.” But as fresher’s, you might feel like your seniors will be a little harsh. Don’t worry it’s only in the beginning. Sooner or later, your seniors will be sweet as hell. Just remember this will be the time, when elections will be near. Just kidding! After the initial stage of being rude, they’ll hang out with you like your elder brother or sister. They will give you advice about what notes to study from, how to study, what to do in the college and will guide you all along. And you’ll love them so much that I’m pretty sure even you will tear up at their farewell!   4 (1) 4) You’ll be confused; big time Delhi University with all its perks can also bring forth confusion and chaos. From what society to be a part of, to being present in classes, to where the classes are, to standing up for some post or not, etc., etc. It is confusing and annoying at the same time. But, it is also liberating! For the first time in your life, you will experience something as identical to the real world. So no matter how disorderly and chaotic it all might and will feel, all of it is worth it. Believe me, first year is the best! 5 5) If you are an outstation student, you will fall in love with Delhi. You will fall in love with this city, with all its positives and negatives. This city, let alone Delhi University teach you so much, that it can’t be expressed! But one thing I can assure you, is that “DELHI se pyaar ho jaaega!” So, for the first day, all the best fresher’s! It will be a bumpy yet amazing ride!   This article is contributed by Ria Kasliwal.
