Sundar Pichai's Candid Conversation with SRCC, Delhi University Students

by Team FUCCHA

It was the day that everyone was waiting for. Students cancelled their tickets to get back home. SRCC was ready to host the much awaited event of the year. It was a day to be awe struck. The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai was to address the students and the nation. #AskSundar was trending everywhere. 1 (2)   Entering the SRCC-campus-turned-into-Google-playground, one could witness life size logos of android and Google. After the registration, a cool ID tag and a food coupon was in offer to grab the box of lunch which was a treat again. Layers of security were provided with over a dozen of media vans parked outside. The SRCC Auditorium, which hosted the Commonwealth Games was jam packed with more than 2000+ people gathered inside. This was just the beginning. One could find musical instruments on every seat in the auditorium. Indeed it was another surprise. The event started with the loud sounds of percussions being played. For engaging the audience, a group of lively percussionists performed on stage encouraging the audience to pick up the beats.Later a group of singers enthralled the audience with their own versions of Bollywood hits without any musical instruments. What a lively performance it was!     What was next, was it the man himself turning up? No there was another surprise waiting. HarshaBhogle, a well-known cricket commentator was the host for the event. No one could believe what was going on. Sundar’s speech was scheduled at 1.30pm and it was already 1.15pm and students thought anyways they have to wait at least an hour because big shots take their time to arrive. No, they were proved wrong. There he was, well ahead of his schedule. That indeed took everyone by surprise. 4 3 (2)   SundarPichai entered the auditorium with the crowd up on their feet. There was a huge round of cheers and applause for the Indian born American. The conversation started off by talking about his early days at Chennai and moved on to IIT Kharagpur. Talking about the his first day in Google, Mr. Pichai recounted that back in 2004 he felt like ‘a kid in a candy store’ when he entered Google. He also said Google is more of a balanced space where work essentially meets fun. He quoted “In Silicon Valley, people start their own companies and even if they fail, they wear it as a badge of honour.” 6   He also stated he’s an ardent fan of football and follows Barcelona every now and then. His favourite player is Messi. Born in India, how one could not be a cricket fan, yes he is indeed a crazy cricket fan too. Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar were his idols. While he was young he would wake up in the middle of the night to watch matches, driving his mom crazy. The students got a chance to ask questions from Mr. Pichai too. He calmly answered all these questions and there were a few video questions from his IIT Kharargpur as well. An interesting one among the lot was - A video question came asking him why Android version names are not named after Indian desserts, to which he laughingly said that they’ll keep that in mind next time they launch another version. So expecting we would be getting Android Laddu or Android GulabJamun! 7   It followed up with a rapid fire round, where a series of questions were thrown towards Pichai by HarshaBhogle. When asked how much he scored during his Class 12 exams, he smiled and said, “Not enough to get into SRCC.” There was a huge round of applause from the auditorium. 2   It was time for him to leave but before that as every host does, there was a Selfie with Sundar but with a different gadget. It was a 360 degree Selfie camera which was able to cover the entire crowd in the picture. Before his departure, there was yet another surprise, Google offered free Starwars Cardboard for every student present in the auditorium. This was the biggest surprise among the lot. The impact of this event had left everyone spell bound. While there aren’t any big takeaways from Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s India visit, it does prove how significant India is for Google as a market and Google India is driving innovation for search giant.     ----------------------- Article contributed by our Guest Writer and intern Vijayraj.
