Summary

JEE Main also known as Joint Entrance Examination is conducted to offer admissions to the candidates interested in undergraduate engineering programmes at NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and other funded technical institutions (CFTIs) located across the country.

JEE Main 2017 dates have been announced. The exam is to be held offline on April 2 while the exam in online mode will be conducted on April 8 and 9, 2017.

JEE Main 2017 results will be declared on April 27, 2017 (tentatively). This exam is the eligibility test for the JEE advanced and the students need to clear this exam to get admission in programmes offered by 16 IIT’s and Indian School of Mines. Only the top 250,000 score holders in JEE Main are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced Exam. Students who want to pursue BE/BTech at NITs, IIITs and CFTIs they need to score well in JEE Main Paper- 1 which evaluates the aptitude of the candidates.

Eligibilty Criteria

To appear in JEE Main exam the candidate needs to fulfill some eligibility criteria. The candidates who cannot fulfill these criteria are not allowed to sit in the exam. So make sure you fulfill all the requirements.

  • You need have a AADHAAR card. At the time of filling application form of JEE (Main)–2017, the candidates will have to enter their AADHAAR number, name, date of birth & gender which will be validated with the UIDAI’s data.  In case, these particulars do not match, the candidates will not be able to fill the application form for JEE (Main)–2017. Therefore, the candidates are advised to ensure that their AADHAAR card has correct details of their name, date of birth & gender as per school records. 

  • Candidates whose date of birth falls on or after 1 st  October, 1992 (for general and OBC candidate) are eligible to apply for this exam. If candidates belong to reserved category like SC, ST and PwD category, then the date of birth that falls on or after 1 st  October, 1987 are eligible for JEE main application. 

  • Candidates appearing for JEE Main 2017 must have passed class 12th with Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics in order to apply. However for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs & CFTIs candidates must have secured at least 75% in their class 12th board exams (65% for SC/ST students ).

  • All the Candidates who are appearing for JEE Main must have taken at least five subjects in class 12th/ qualifying examination in order to be eligible for writing JEE (Main) - 2017.  The candidates who have taken four subjects are not permitted to write JEE (Main) 2017 and if such candidates appear in JEE (Main) 2017 by furnishing wrong information, their rank/result will not be declared. So make sure you don’t fill up any false information because that won’t benefit you in any way.

  • A candidate can attempt atleast 3 times for JEE Main.

  • Since the states of Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland and Odisha had joined JEE (Main) system from 2014. Thus, the age limit, in these states for admission is based on their state level examinations, as per their past practice only.  The number of attempts in such cases remains same as per their past practice. This is however not applicable for admission to IITs/NITs/IIITs/CFTIs. 

Exam Pattern

JEE Main exam consist of two papers. Candidates seeking admission in BE/BTech programmes at NITs, IIITs and CFTIs appears for Paper-1 whereas Paper-2 IS given by the candidates for architecture and planning programmes.

This exam is of three hour duration. The candidates can give this exam in either of the two mediums, that is:

  • Computer Based Exam

  • Pen-Paper Based Exam

The paper consist a total of 90 questions. The questions are from different subjects to check the aptitude of the candidates.

Computer Based Exams

Here is some information about the computer based exam The Computer Based Exam (CBE) has duration of 3 hours and consists of question from subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. All questions are of equal weightage.

 In JEE Main the candidate is awarded with total of four marks for every correct answer and for every wrong answer candidate will lose one marks. However, no marks is deducted if the candidate choose to not answer the question.

Candidates must not select multiple responses because for every question there is only one correct answer.

Pen and Paper Based Examination

Here is some information about the Pen and Paper Based Examination

The pen and paper based examination also have a three hour duration. The question paper is divided into three sections each for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each section consists of some multiple choice questions from specific subjects.

In JEE Main the candidate is awarded with total of four marks for every correct answer and for every wrong answer candidate will lose one marks. However, no mark is deducted if the candidates choose to not answer the question.

Candidates must not select multiple responses because for every question there is only one correct answer.

The computer based test and the pen & paper based entrance exam takes place on separate dates.
