by Team FUCCHA

“According to studies, the built environment sector of India will face acute shortage (85 per cent) of skilled manpower, across various professional categories that translate to 44 million jobs.”

Owing to this fact, it is quite evident that educational courses in the built environment sector such as Construction Management, Real Estate, and Quantity Surveying offer a promising long-term career. The industry today is in dire need of trained professionals who can transact and execute complex projects within time and financing constraints.

Furthermore, India nearly has 50 million people working in the built environment industry, out of which only 2 million are professionally qualified while remaining are construction workers. The current demand to supply gap ranges between 82 to 86! This clearly indicates a dire need for core built environment professionals!

It is quite a given notion that opportunities to choose a career that builds India are enormous in volume and value! It can provide aspirants with a diverse and exciting career with the opportunity to travel around the world, work on different complex projects while making a valuable contribution to the country.

There are specialized institutions such as RICS School of Built Environment that recognise the massive potential in this career and aim to train more young professionals to utilise the scope this field offers with their specialised MBA degree. However, we find that a lot of aspirants find themselves in the middle of a dilemma between choosing a specialised MBA from RICS SBE or certification from other colleges like NICMAR. With this article, we hope to eliminate this confusion.

Here are a few common differentiators between an RICS SBE MBA and other certifications:

High-quality qualification

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors is the leading professional body in the field of built environment based in UK, which accredits over 600 global courses across the world. In India, RICS SBE is the only institution that provides RICS-accredited MBA degrees. On the other hand, in case of certification, students are not granted with any degree or diploma.

Industry-ready education

Wouldn’t being a member of the professional body of RICS, UK be the best thing for a built environment aspirant? After attaining an RICS-accredited MBA degree, one has the esteemed opportunity to qualify for MRICS (Member of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.) With this degree in hand, one is entirely industry-ready to start their career and work their way to the top. On the other hand, after completing a certification course, one is required to attain the membership of various National and International Certifying bodies to initiate the process of reaching the top.

Learning Opportunities

When one chooses an RICS-accredited MBA program, they not only sign up for world-class education but also an industry-led curriculum with hands-on experience. The practical knowledge gained will prove to be immensely helpful for those seeking to break into the built environment with minimal complications. Certifications are usually more on the theoretical side of the industry, which can hinder an individual’s professional growth.

International Exposure

Unlike certification courses which are not entirely devoted to global exposure, RICS SBE recognises the importance of an international understanding of the industry. Owing to this, the institution has formed linkages with several universities in Asia, UK, Australia, and US to enable their students and faculty to engage in summer programs, semester exchange, travelling studios and research.

Worldwide accepted degree

Since RICS-accredited MBA degrees are UGC recognised and accepted around the world, one has the luxury to build a career in any territory around the globe. Whether you want to stay in South West to advance in local infrastructure or want to work tax-free in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, this degree can be your ticket to the best of your career.  This is the kind of weight and opportunity that only a specialised MBA can give to your career.  On the other hand, there are certain institutes like NICMAR that provide certifications which are not even UGC or AICTE recognised. If you do plan on availing a certification course, make sure that the institute is appropriately recognised.

At the end of the day, it is through an MBA that one can stand out from the crowd and learn advanced skills, theoretical approaches, and strategic competencies for varied businesses. The RICS-accredited MBA will put you on the global map of the built environment sector and make you industry ready! What is your opinion - MBA or certification?
