Today, in this world of globalisation, there is hype all around,India is titled as the nation to become superpower ,and why not ?? we are the largest democracy ,we are 5th largest economy in terms of buying power parity, we have nuclear power ,we have 3rd largest army in the world, till last year we were growing at the rate of 8.3% growth rate , all these things cumulatively contribute to India’s power- power of example, the power of attraction to India’s culture ,political values ,traditions ,foreign policy etc. alternatively India’s soft power.
Soft power, briefly, can be defined as the ability of a country to attract others because of its culture, political values, traditions, etc.
The biggest source of soft power is the different channels of communication and in today’s world with internet, blogging, chatting, messaging or in short ultra fast communication it is rapidly increasing.
India have the most number of all news channels than any country in the world ,but it’s not all that if u want to pursue soft power u have to be connected andIndia has become astonishingly connected country. we have been selling 15 million sell phone a week ,right now there are 509 millions sell phones in India, even the vendors ,the rikshaw pullers who uses a machine developed in stone age have the 20th century instrument ,the farmers ,the fishermen ,or in others worlds, it’s the empowerment of the underclass and that’s where India is heading, that’s the India’s soft power.
That’s not the only thing about India that is spreading. Bollywood is taking certain aspect of Indian culture around the globe, not only to Indian population of US and the UK but from Africa to china, from Russia to Australia everywhere. It’s not only about Bollywood it’s about many other things like music, dance, art, yoga, Ayurveda, and even about Indian cuisine, today in silicon valley the students from IITs are respected with the same accord as the students from Mit. Even on ethical and religion ground India is a open society with so many religion within one country with different caste, creed, culture, colour, cuisine, customs and costumes but still rallying around the consensus.
The whole idea is, India is not nationalism of ethnicity or religion or language but India is a nationalism of idea emerging from ancient civilisation ,united by share history but sustained above all by pluralistic democracy.
